Cyspera and the interaction with Vitiligo
Vitiligo is an unpredictable condition, which pathophysiology is not well characterised in the scientific
literature. Although multiple hypotheses have been suggested as potential triggers that cause vitiligo, studies
strongly imply that changes in the immune system are responsible for the condition by attacking and destroying the
melanocytes of the skin. Tyrosinase, which is not a component of the immune system but is an enzyme involved in
melanogenesis activation in melanocytes, plays as a major autoantigen in generalized vitiligo. Some believes that
hyperpigmentation through the hyperactivity of Tyrosinase (or rather its hyper-concentration) can cause or
exacerbate vitiligo. No interaction have been characterised between cysteamine and vitiligo. Incidentally, by
down-regulating the activity of tyrosinase, cysteamine may even, in principle, reduce the risks of vitiligo.
